Reggaeton & Nazis

 clark-nazis.jpg

Over the years, Clark Avenue has been claimed by many different sets. Our memories are of rapid-fire Spanish, religiously powered tambourines, The Noise mixtapes, and empanadas. These are fond memories.

Unfortunately, in the 1970s there were people on Clark who lobbied for a “utopian” world devoid of good food, music, and summertime celebrations. Casimer Kalemba, head of the United White People’s Party, promoted his unique view of the world from his storefront at 4319 Clark Avenue (pictured above). A strong advocate of the so-called white power movement, Kalemba injected himself into the racial strife of the Five Points neighborhood by distributing his literature outside of Collinwood High School during a time of great unrest. In 1975 the stabbing of three black youths by a group of whites, one of which was acquitted, set off weeks of violence. Kalemba sought to capitalize on fair-skinned fear but fortunately lost out to the numbers.

Little is known about Mr. Kalemba other than he has since passed away and for a time his kin ran afoul of the law. All that is left is this image of his storefront, which is in our opinion, a near perfect design within the aesthetic of the white power movement. It has the poorly stenciled text, confusing iconography, and the layout of a novice. Our only suggestion would have been to elevate graphics and place the telephone number on the bottom followed by a softer, catchier phrase like “It’s alright to be lily white!”

This is our story and sadly it has not come to an end.

Inside Out

couch-bullshooters.jpg

A common sight in our city is the contents of inside lives strewn across a public roadway. It reminds us that the stuff of daily life that we have acquired and consider are own, always without fail, returns to Elohim’s celebrated showroom.

As professional observers of all things mundane SGS takes note of this unique phenomenon whenever we see it.We wonder about the events that led up to a person’s right shoe being left curb side, or the Cruisin’ USA arcade game that was ditched on Bradley Road. Often it is a county sheriff who is responsible for a water logged sofa, but jealous lovers, mischievous teens, and lazy contractors also share some of the blame. Regardless of the culprit it is always delightful to see people’s personal effects placed outside for all to see.

Coventry Flash Mob Pictures

one-up.jpg

When reports of digitally organized children hit newsstands on June 30th Cleveland SGS was filled with hope for the future. We were momentarily impressed that in this sleepy town a kilo of youthful aggression was coordinated through a 2 inch screen in coded English.

On closer examination we learned that this reported day of rage was not caught on video and hinged on the testimony of quadratically handicapped ice cream vendor.

Politicians reacted and our beloved paper morphed a mob to a gang. Duped again by kings we are left only to pray for the ignitor variable that wakes us from our slumber.

You can do it Cleveland … flash mob the next sunny day parade you find. Do it with style and make many mothers cry in the process.

Who is Charles “Chuckie” Jackman?

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

charles-jackman-bw.jpg

The trials and tribulations of Charles “Chuckie” Jackman has meant so much to the city of Cleveland. In his years as a prominent land developer, social activist, and champion of the oppressed, Jackman defined excellence in commerce and set the standard for all who followed.

At the time, one of the most successful business owner/operators in the country, he created and controlled a corporation, Jackman Properties Development, Inc. (JPD, Inc.) that owned one of the most strategic and valuable real estate parcels in the Cleveland area. Under his solely-owned JPD corporation at East 72nd and St. Clair, upwards of 99 successful businesses were running simultaneously and exhibiting tremendous success.

Frequently referred to as “You Already Know” and “Lucky Chuck”, Jackman was the first Clevelander with enough courage to take on The Big Three: Land Acquisitions Corp. (LAC), The NostruPharm Foundation, and the Caruso Intermodal Company Ltd (CICL). But his prolific business prowess and radical outspokenness clashed with the city’s politically powerful entities and hierarchical organization and set into motion an enmity that would lead to his eventual economic destruction.

For your reading pleasure SGS has deconstructed the Jackman story in the Thursday, March 13, 2014 edition of The Plain Dealer. Our reporting from the future was made possible with the support of our Shadow Client (SC), a man whose good name we have sworn to restore. He alone has opened our eyes to the evil that lurks behind many tax-exempt corporations, and for this we are eternally grateful.

Towne Casino

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

town-casino-marquee2.jpg

Back when detonating an explosive device in a populated area wasn’t considered terrorism, it was used as a coercive tool by area gangsters and other discontents.

The Towne Casino located on 10613 Euclid Avenue was a local jazz bar owned by Sanford Gill and for a time managed by Little Ted Miclau. During it’s short run from 1951 to 1953 it featured many jazz giants such as J.J. Johnson, Sarah Vaughn and Colman Hawkins. The Casino also featured a healthy line-up of female impersonators, a unique profession previously reported on by WDGC Impact Team reporters Rick Donovan and Daltry Higgins.

Looking back the jazz club seems like a harmless venue for an universally admired American art form. However in the 50s and 60s the jazz club was threatening to many Clevelanders who, much like today, detested the idea of races commingling if even for a night of refreshing beverages and smooth jazz.

After only 3 years of operation the Towne Casino suffered three bomb attacks which were thought to have been racially motivated. Other clubs such as the Jazz Temple suffered similar attacks and sadly the tradition of coercive violence continued on throughout our city’s history.

On August 1, 1953 the Towne Casino closed its doors forever, auctioned off its assets, and posted the above pictured message on its marquee. A sad end to what sounds like a good run at greatness.

Bitch

Such straightforward communications make us wonder who is this bitch and what did she/he do? Does he/she already know? Or is it just an observation of life. If the latter we most certainly agree.
