SGS Book Club — Simon Sez
Sunday, June 29th, 2008Buddy Simon grandfather of the Cleveland sign movement rolled out his seminal and only known book in 1981 titled Simon Sez. Many Clevelanders will remember Buddy signs brightening up Carnegie Avenue for over three decades. Simon would rib a politician on one sign and commend a local sports hero on another. Buddy Simon was the town crier for the average Cleveland resident who slugged it out everyday. Simon is mostly forgotten today and is more of an obscure Cleveland trivia question, but to SGS his life and art are a true inspiration. Simon found a way to use his art to convey his thoughts on the events of the day. He was rarely vicious and you would not always agree with his sign du jour. Yet all of the people I have spoken to about Simon flash a smile and speak fondly of knowing that when they drove down Carnegie Buddy’s signs would be there. If you would like to check out a few of Buddy’s signs check out this link.
