In James Beard’s 1964 memoir, Delights and Prejudices, the author coined the phrase, “taste memory”. ClevelandSGS always thought that this term was a bit annoying as it is often used by culinary aesthetes, but one item lives up to this evocative term for us.
Everyone has a favorite confection that they would cross the city to get to no matter what the time or weather condition. After numerous discussions and debates on desserts, SGS finally agreed that the Almondine at the West Side Market stood above all other challengers. This towering achievement can be purchased at Michael’s Bakery(Stand D2). The lovely Lyuba(pictured above) who works at this stand is always ready to fork over these delicacies with a smile. Lyuba informed SGS that the Mitterholzer family who runs Michael’s Bakery lovingly hand crafts the Almondines and then ships them to the Market in the morning. Michael’s Bakery is located on Broadview Rd. in Cleveland.
To present the recipe of the Almondine to our readers would be a grave injustice. One must make the trek to the West Side Market and pay the $1.25(same price as some boring doughnut), for a gluttony sensation that will leave you delighted.
