Monday, June 29th, 2009DE ANGELO’S PIZZA
Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009Seoul Hot Pot is one of the few Korean restaurants in downtown Cleveland. Although SGS recommends this eatery for a visit we wanted to reminisce about De Angelo’s Pizza. This is a photo that we took in 2006 before they eliminated the old pizza sign from the building. De Angelo’s Pizza was a great neighborhood spot for kids in the Superior-Payne neighborhood during the mid 80’s through 1999.
Hundreds of hours were spent swilling cokes, eating greasy pizza and playing Lethal Enforcers and Joust to kill time after school and during the summer with friends. Owners Jin Hu and his wife were always nice to the local community and were two of the original successful Asian business owners in this neighborhood. Their business is definitely one of the reasons why the Asian restaurant explosion is happening today on St.Clair, Superior and Payne Avenue.
CHRIST FOR CLEVELAND
Monday, June 22nd, 2009SGS recently came across a few photos of Baptist churches in Cleveland from the past and this one struck us as particularly interesting. The photo is from 1942 and the signage promotes the visit of Hyman Jedidiah Appelman. Appleman was one of the fathers of mass evangelism and was the original poster boy for Jews for Jesus. Appelman’s visit to Calvary Baptist Church was just one of his stops along a 45 year journey of converting and initiating first time professors to the Baptist faith. If you would like to hear an interview with Dr. Appelman please check out this link from the 1960 radio show Unshackled.
Breakwater Ave.
Sunday, June 21st, 2009The young lady pictured above is known to residents north of Detroit as a frequent feeder of birds. As she gently tosses Nickles bread to her audience she affectionately insults them for either being too loud, or having big mouths. Her expression of love through criticism is characteristic of the way Clevelanders speak of their city. When asked where we are from we typically preface it with a descriptive insult, an insult so intimate that it could only be delivered by family.
Harry X Sysack Sign Co.
Friday, June 19th, 2009Stink’s Bait & Tackle
Thursday, June 18th, 2009Today while stopping to admire a finely painted sign, we had the pleasure of meeting Anthony (left), the owner of Stinks Bait & Tackle, and his friend Bob. With the recent closing of Ted’s Tackle & Bait, Anthony thought it was high time to set up his own operation at 3267 West 25th, one lot north of Dickey’s Lanes.
Much of commercial real estate pricing mystifies Cleveland SGS. Even with the surplus of commercial space on Detroit and Lorain Ave., Anthony stated that the desired rent near Ted’s was unreasonably high. His West 25th location is affordable, has boat friendly parking available across the street, and most importantly profitable.
If you want to do fishing business with a righteous guy then please make a point of stopping by Stinks Bait & Tackle at 3267 West 25th street. For hours of operation call 216.741.1335.
In case you are wondering the business is named after Anthony’s son who is affectionately known as Stink.
Voss Industries
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009Despite what we hear about the shrinking manufacturing base in Cleveland, Voss Industries on West 25th continues to operate at a brisk pace. On any summer night one can witness the workers toiling away on the the shop floor while it gently exhales a blue haze of fluorescent light onto passersby.
The picture above is of the shop floor and one of its particularly curious workers.
Founded in 1957, Voss Industries, Inc. has been a major supplier of high quality V-retainer couplings and mating flanges, T-bolt clamps, strap assemblies, precision stampings, specialty fasteners and other specialty products, such as bulge-formed components, to a wide variety of industrial markets.
Halcyon Charities Boxing
Tuesday, June 16th, 2009Halcyon Charities Boxing Event from Cleveland SGS on Vimeo.
It goes without saying that amateur boxing events strike a cord in the soul of all those who attend. Boxers are unified by discipline. Attendees admire the fighters’ ability to suppress unruly emotions. It is a sport that brings people of different classes, races, and genders together to marvel at the mortality of Man.
The video above is comprised of footage from last Saturday’s amateur boxing event at the Halcyon Masonic Temple on Franklin Blvd. If you have never attended an amateur boxing event we strongly encourage you to do so; Cleveland’s boxing community is one of the more friendly and welcoming groups our city has to offer.
