Cleveland SGS has two favorite local jazz historians, Joe Mossbrook and Dr. Walking Bill.  This powerful jazz duo furnished SGS with the following information about the Happy Dog Saloon, “operated by Roger Bohn from 1971 to 1975, artists such as McCoy Tyner, Weather Report, Oregon, Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Gil Evans, Charlie Mingus, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis and Sun Ra” all played at the Dog. Additionally SGS found this scan from a visit by SGS favorite Pharoah Sanders.

Great picture! I was just listening to a Sun Ra album (United World in Outer Space) recorded at the Smiling Dog Saloon on Jan. 30, 1975.

    Hello,

My name is Gary Hoopengardner and I to on the responsibility of recording
the music for WMMS Radio after Dick Whitington from Whisker Recording stopped recording the shows. Sun Ra was done by me. My studio was called Sound Stage Recording Studio. My friend J. Gregory Ashton was at my side helping during the process. The first night, was difficult, and Sun Ra was hard to work with, or maybe I was hard to work with, anyway the recording had to be done another night, but it wasn’t ever aired on WMMS radio as it was expected to be. Sun Ra ended up with the master and this became United World in Outer Space.
